This lecture explores the application of computational form-generation and parametric rationalization methods in the practice of architecture. This is understood as a comprehensive approach to achieving constructible designs which implement a fluid, complex architectural vision while enabling engineering feasibility and achieving economic efficiency through a fully integrated digital building delivery process. Our work serves as an integral part of the process of architecture, from project conception through construction, providing architectural and computational expertise at all stages of design.

Generative form-finding as a design technique will be addressed; in particular the aspects of creation of form as either an expression of pure geometry or as the embodiment of structure. This coincides with requirements for constructability through pre-rationalized adaptable component techniques, or the post-rationalization of NURBS surfaces through various techniques including tessellation using quadrilateral translation surfaces, developable shapes and free-form panelization techniques.

The lecture further examines the use of advanced design and construction techniques adapted from the aerospace, shipbuilding and automotive industries, applied to a variety of projects at different stages of development, as well as a range of designs by other well-known architects world-wide. In each case, parametric computational infrastructure serves as an enabler of visionary designs by bridging the gap between concepts of form and constructible solutions, using advanced parametric tools, custom programming and interoperability solutions, design collaboration and digital project management methods.

Cristiano Ceccato is an architectural designer and computer scientist at Zaha Hadid Architects in London, where he leads a range of projects at all stages of development. His work also comprises the development of computationally driven architectural design and associated fabrication methods on a wide range of design projects at all stages of development, including digitally integrated project delivery (BIM).

Mr. Ceccato spent the previous seven years leading extensive project work in the office of Frank Gehry in Los Angeles, USA, pursuing the development and application of parametric design tools and integrated modeling principles, and associated digital construction and project delivery methods. These new forms of practice are being applied to a growing range of projects for architects and developers worldwide through Gehry Technologies, an award-winning technology and consulting firm, which Mr. Ceccato co-founded in 2003.

Mr. Ceccato has practiced architecture in Europe, Asia and the USA. He has lectured widely on the subject of computational rule-based design systems and parametric form finding in digital building processes. He has held academic faculty positions in London, Milan and Hong Kong, where he was an Assistant Professor of Design Computation.

Cristiano Ceccato received the Diploma in Architecture from the Architectural Association (1996) and an MS in Computer Science from the Imperial College of Science and Technology in London (1997). He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (England) in 2004.
